Temptation incarnate would be a large, winged animal, one that could transport Crystal and Adam to a remote island away from prying eyes. The flight scheduled for the next day, however, would take them into the belly of the beast. Having packed a suitcase, Crystal collapsed on her bed and thought about her predicament. Sharing a hotel with Adam and not being able to touch him: the definition of torture. Needing to get her mind off the matter, she grabbed her phone and searched for Esme in the directory of contacts. Before she could make the call, her doorbell rang. Given the late hour, she considered ignoring it and calling her best friend anyway, but the visitor soon progressed to loud, incessant thumping. Bloody hell. Don’t tell me Mum locked herself out again.

The woman on the doorstep was not a drunk Judy, but a hysterical Jade, with tears streaming down her face. ‘Why haven’t you answered my damn calls?’

Crystal felt knots forming in her stomach as she tugged Jade inside, shunting the door with her foot. ‘Oh shoot! What’s wrong?’

Jade threw her arms around Crystal and wept against her neck.

‘Shh, it’s okay,’ Crystal soothed, stroking her sister’s back. ‘Tell me what happened?’

‘I screwed up big time.’

Ushering Jade further into the lounge room, Crystal sat her on the couch and embraced her tight. ‘It can’t be that bad if I’m not bailing you out of gaol.’

Jade huffed. ‘Getting away with crimes doesn’t make us any less guilty.’

Pulling back, Crystal studied Jade. ‘What did you do?’

‘I cheated on Dieter.’ She followed her confession with a fresh bout of tears.

Crystal gaped at her. ‘Does he know?’ she asked in a whisper. Unable to speak through her crying, Jade shook her head. Crystal pulled her back in for another hug, waiting for the sobbing to subside before asking, ‘When?’

‘Saturday night. I… I fucked a guy at the club. Sargon’s new dealer.’

‘Oh boy! Was this a one-time thing?’

When Jade bit her bottom lip, Crystal’s heart sank. Emotions swirled together like marbled paint. On one hand, she pitied her sister, on the flip side, she was sad for Dieter. They had always been the perfect couple and she figured it was only a matter of time before wedding bells chimed.

‘This guy has pursued me for a while now,’ Jade explained. ‘He’d tempted me before, but I didn’t give in until Saturday, although we did it like five times that night. I thought maybe he’d get me out of his system if we had sex, but I was wrong. He just rang me for another hook up. I don’t know what to do, Crissy.’

‘I can tell you what you should do.’

She gave Crystal an expectant look.

‘Tell Dieter, and you can go from there.’

Jade’s big, hazel eyes opened wide. ‘That would crush him, not to mention his Visa.’

Crystal sighed. ‘I know, and that’s why I’m torn on this. I’ve learned there are lots of murky moral ambiguities when it comes to matters of the heart and I’m in no place to advise you, let alone judge you.
